Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary MusicAugust 1-10, 2014
"Cabrillo has become a summer mecca for musicians and a premier musical destination for audiences.” –San Jose Mercury News
The Cabrillo Festival presents the here and now of contemporary music for a world-class orchestra each summer in downtown Santa Cruz and at Mission San Juan Bautista. From August 1-10, 2014, Maestra Marin Alsop returns with a program as diverse as any before and invites you to join her as an adventurer standing at the edge of the frontier. Thirteen composers will be in residence, including newcomers and returning favorites, millennials to seasoned boomers; all coming from around the globe and representing a diversity of styles for which Marin and the Cabrillo Festival have become famous. Three world premieres, two U.S. premieres, four West Coast premieres and a roster of renowned soloists highlight the season. Banjo master Béla Fleck and the captivating ensemble Time for Three will make their Festival debuts, and violinist extraordinaire Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and virtuoso saxophonist Timothy McAllister make return visits. Creative and curious minds will gather for five programs of new works for orchestra, two chamber concerts, free open rehearsals (starting July 27), panel discussions, meetups, the Church Street Fair, and more. You’re invited to celebrate, learn, and delight—about music and about life—and to step into the exciting unknown.
